Humans of SKODA: Philip Gottweis, Coordinator of Sponsoring and Cooperation

SKODA AUTO has enormous number of employees and we can’t introduce all of them, but we have carefully chosen few of them to show you how it is work for us. We have interviewed also Philip Gottweis, who has very interesting job in the department of Experience marketing.

Could you tell us for an introduction, where are you from and what is your education background?

I am German and I am from a city which is close to Wolfsburg, which is called Gifhorn. I studied Sports Management at the Sport University in Cologne and after my pre-degree I did my Master in Sports Management in Newcastle, UK. During my studies I did internships to gain some experience, among others, at AUDI in Ingolstadtand at the Volkswagen Group China in Beijing. My Master thesis with the topic “Evaluating Sport Sponsorship Effectiveness” I wrote in the US at Volkswagen Group of America in Herndon, Virginia. I graduated in the end of 2009 and I started at SKODA in January 2011.

Did you have a clear idea what would you like to do in your life or did you leave it on chance? How did you get the job in SKODA AUTO? How long have you been working here?

I think it is mandatory to have a clear direction and vision which of course can be adjusted if a new opportunity arises. However, never forget the focus in which field you would like to build your personal career. Same is for the private life. During my internship in China I met people who started working for SKODA and I got the offer to join the team in SKODA.

Your job position is called “Coordinator of Sponzoring and Cooperation” and that sounds maybe a little bit mysteriously, but in reality we could say it’s a dream job for young people. Could you explain us what is behind? (you could explain it in more details :) )

The job is connected to sports and to work with global sport sponsoring platforms such Tour de France and IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships. It’s a very diverse job as you work with internal departments, agencies, importers and other stakeholders such as right owners of a sponsorship property. If you are open-minded, like to work in an internal marketing team and enjoy working on strategic topics to define companies direction then it’s your position.

How does your ordinary working day look like?

As this job is connected to strategic topics everyday can be different. But normally it is like that you push your topics while aligning internally and with external partners (importers and rights owners). Mainly it is an office job but has great benefits as it’s requires to travel from time to time.

As you have mentioned your job position is connected with business trips to foreign countries. Which countries have you already visited and what was the purpose of your visit?

I have been many times to France because of the Tour de France partnership but also have been to many countries in Europe for business such as Italy, Spain, UK, Benelux and Germany to name some. My last recent business trip was overseas to Canada to meet a potential partner company.

You speak fluently English and also German. How is it to work in a Czech environment? Is it limiting for you to do not speak Czech? Have you tried to learn Czech?

Luckily in our department we speak English because my Czech is not good. I have tried to learn Czech and some basics I know to show that I am trying too. However, at work and in private life you can achieve a lot with English in SKODA and CZ. I like to work with the local colleagues which are very helpful. Working in CZ for six years did again benefit my international profile.

How do you perceive the culture of SKODA AUTO? Is it more Czech, German or we could already say it is international?

I think it’s a good mixture of both Czech and German which makes it international. However, SKODA should never lose its roots and heritage and should be always an open Czech company as it is now.

What do you like most on your job in SKODA AUTO?

The diversity, the Internationality with different people and the challenge to push strategic topics to create something lasting for the company.
