Driver state and mood monitoring: data analytics and design of a countermeasure

Škoda Auto offers its university full-time students the opportunity to gain valuable experience as interns and possibility to work on diploma thesis in the Czech Republic’s biggest company.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • With increasing vehicle automation, Driver State Monitoring is becoming an increasingly important topic, to be able to prevent safety-critical situations. One implemented measure, SKODA's Driver alert system is designed to alert the driver if it senses deviations in the steering wheel behavior in relation to lane markings and high vehicle speed.
  • The goal of this thesis is to use existing inputs obtained from the car, such as steering wheel corrections or miss-clicking on the screen to establish patterns and create possible countermeasures for problems such as motion sickness, driver fatigue, distraction, or irritation. The thesis could start by reviewing existing literature on driver awareness and mood monitoring and identifying gaps in current knowledge. For one topic, for example driver distraction, fatigue, irritation or motion sickness, one could then proceed to collect and analyze data from various sensors and sources within in the car to identify patterns and trends that are indicative of either of these topics. This could involve developing algorithms to detect correlations between variables such as steering wheel corrections, screen interactions and driver vital signs, possibly complementing existing systems as the Driver Alert system. Additionally, the thesis could propose and implement a strategic solution, such as lighting, haptic feedback or auditory alerts to countermeasure the chosen problem and thus improving driver state or mood.
