Mladá Boleslav is a city best known amongst the public for its automotive history. In one of the previous articles you could inspire yourself with tips for interesting historical and cultural places, with some dating back as early as the 10th century. After you discover all possibilities that Mladá Boleslav offers, it's time to explore its surroundings further! Let me give you four ideas for short weekend getaways during the year.
SPRING: RELAX IN SPA TOWN OF PODĚBRADY
A balm for the heart – that is a small town of Poděbrady located on the banks of the Elbe. It has been an important Czech spa town for over a century. The town offers natural mineral springs used for drinking and bathing which could even treat many diseases. You can enjoy special spa services like honey massages, or just stroll around the town and absorb the calm atmosphere of the colonnade. I have one secret tip for you! Don’t miss the chance to eat at La MAMMA Cucina restaurant, the food is just great. You will arrive in this nice town from Mladá Boleslav by car within 45 minutes, or by train in one and half hours.
SUMMER: WANDER THROUNG THE ROCKY KOKOŘÍNSKO
Kokořínsko is a natural protected area 50 km away from Mladá Boleslav. It doesn’t just feature stunning nature, but also architectural treasures such as numerous historical villages, Kokořín castle and romantic castle ruins. Moreover, you can find carved caves and sculptures here. The famous Devil’s head rock (Čertova hlava in Czech) above the village of Želízy could be called the small Czech Mount Rushmore. Instead of the presidents, you can find two large rock heads of fairy tale beings from hell. In the summer, Kokořínsko is also a perfect place for wild-camping. If you are brave enough, just venture into the nature for a weekend and sleep there. If you are a fan of sunbathing and swimming, natural white sandy beaches can be found at Máchovo Lake in the town of Doksy. It’s a good party place, too!
AUTUMN: DISCOVER THE TRUE BOHEMIAN PARADISE
For hiking lovers, I truly recommend visiting the beautiful Bohemian Paradise. Thanks to the historic landmarks and landscape, Bohemian Paradise has attracted artists of all kinds for centuries. Discover this unique mixture of bizarre rocks, pine forests, impressive castles and magical villages with timber cottages. The Prachov Rocks, in Czech called Prachovské skály, are one of the most picturesque spots of Bohemian Paradise. These sandstone pinnacles which are situated near the town of Jičín will leave you speechless. Another famous natural landmark the Hrubá Skála Rocks (Hruboskalsko) with a castle on the top of a sandstone rock is definitely worth a visit, too. This fairytale area, known in Czech as Český ráj, is located about 30 km from Mladá Boleslav, so you can easily get there by car within 30 minutes. Don’t worry, it is also easily accessible by public transport.
WINTER: SKI AT JEŠTĚD MOUNTAIN
In winter, the Ještěd Mountain near Liberec is a favourite destination for all ski and snowboard enthusiasts, while in summer, the opportunities for outdoor adventures are also almost endless. On the summit stands the iconic building designed by Karel Hubáček in 1966 that acts as a hotel, restaurant, observation deck and TV tower. For its unique construction, it was awarded the Auguste Perret Prize. It doesn’t matter if you are up for a hike, downhill skiing or biking, Ještěd Mountain never disappoints you. In good weather conditions, the view from the top extends over most of Northern Bohemia and onto our neighbours Poland and Germany. Just jump in the car and you’ll reach Liberec in 40 minutes.
